Seed Saving Challenge

Purpose

The Seed Saving Challenge encourages community members to learn seed-saving skills, preserve locally adapted plant varieties, and increase donations of viable properly saved seeds to the seed library.

Eligibility

The challenge is open to all community members aged 18 and older.

Participants under 18 may enter with the permission and supervision of a parent.

Challenge Period

The challenge begins on JUNE 1, 2026 and ends on OCTOBER 31, 2026. Registration is ongoing as approved by the organizers.

All seed donations and required documentation must be received by NOVEMBER 15, 2026.

REGISTRATION

All entries must be pre-approved to be eligible for prizes.

Eligible seeds

Vegetables

Such as Beans, Peas, Lettuce, Arugula, Radish, Salad Greens, Shiso

Herbs

Such as Basil, Cilantro, Sage, Catmint

Flowers

Such as Calendula, Coleus

Native Plants such as Columbine

Other plants may be accepted, please email for approval

*Seeds from cucumber, squash, zucchini, peppers and eggplant will only be accepted if steps have be taken to prevent cross pollination

*Seeds from biennials will not be accepted this year

*Sunflower, Marigold and Runner Beans will not be eligible for the contest this year

Please note that we do not accept seeds from:

Hybrids, GMOs, Patented or legally restricted varieties, seeds collected from public or protected lands, invasive species, or seeds that do not meet quality standards as decided by the organizers

Seed Saving Requirements

Seeds must be grown by the participant

Participants must follow accepted seed-saving practices appropriate for the crop

Collected seeds must be submitted with a completed label which includes: Participant's name, Plant, Variety, Year Collected

Grand prize

To be eligible for the grand prize you must have donated seed for the type and variety that you registered for.

Entries into monthly draws

Replying to monthly email check in

Including a current photo of the plant in the email

Including a description of the plant (example: height, spread, growing conditions, water needs, pests)

Posting a photo update to the Facebook group

Sharing a story about the plant/seed (favourite recipe, taste/texture, how were it grew in a container, why you would or would not grow it again, where you got the seeds)

Sharing your favourite recipe

Verification

Seed Savers Club reserves the right to inspect, test, or reject submissions

Participants may be asked to provide additional information about how seeds were grown and saved

Germination testing may be performed on any submission

Prizes

Prizes may include gift certificates, gardening supplies, seed-saving equipment, gift cards, recognition at events, or other awards determined by the organizers.

Donation of seeds

All accepted seed submissions become donations to the seed libraries.

Donated seeds may be distributed, shared, tested, repackaged, or stored by the organizers.

Participants give over all ownership rights of donated seeds

Code of COnduct

Participants agree to:

• Provide accurate information

• Follow applicable laws and regulations

• Treat other participants respectfully

• Refrain from submitting seeds obtained through misrepresentation or unauthorized collection

Disqualification

The organizers may disqualify participants for:

• Fraudulent submissions

• False labelling

• Submission of prohibited seed types

• Attempts to manipulate scoring or judging

• Violations of contest rules

LIability

Participants assume responsibility for growing, harvesting, and handling seeds. The organizers are not responsible for crop failures, losses, or damages associated with participation.

Rule Changes

The organizers reserve the right to modify these rules, clarify scoring procedures, or cancel the challenge if necessary.
